The Accountant General of the Federation, Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, has called for the entrenchment of transparency and accountability across all tiers and aspects of governance in the country. She made the statement during the 2024 National Council on Finance and Economic Development (NACOFED), held in Bauchi State.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Madein stressed that accountability must extend beyond financial matters to include other resources, such as human and physical assets.
She highlighted the need for robust control measures, noting that focusing solely on financial management while neglecting other areas would result in a disjointed system.
Dr. Madein emphasized the responsibility of public officials to account for assets procured with public funds, urging them to ensure proper management and documentation.

She also underscored the importance of continuous capacity building and workforce motivation to enhance transparency and accountability in managing public resources.
On fiscal discipline, the AGF advised governments at all levels to adopt prudent financial control measures, embrace a culture of savings, and invest in viable projects to prepare for economic uncertainties.
The Accountant General’s remarks highlight the crucial need for transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline to strengthen governance and safeguard public resources.
