The University of Calabar, UNICAL, has officially commenced activities to mark its 50th anniversary, with a focus on celebrating five decades of academic contributions and service to society.
University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi, who inaugurated the programme of activities emphasised the significance of the milestone and the institution’s transformation since its establishment in 1975.
Founded in 1975, UNICAL, has played a vital role in advancing education and contributing to societal development in Nigeria. Professor Obi who is the first female Vice Chancellor of the University during a media briefing, reflected on the its journey from modest beginnings to a prominent seat of learning.

She highlighted the contributions of past and present leaders, staff, and students to the institution’s growth, as she also outlined key activities planned for the anniversary.
The celebration, scheduled to run until March 2025, reflects the University’s commitment to advancing education and fostering innovation in Nigeria.
