The 12 candidates in next week’s Presidential election in Ghana have pledged to abide by the outcome and to rein in their supporters whichever way the results go.
The two frontrunners, former President John Mahama, who is the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Convention, NDC and National Peoples Party, NPP candidate who is the incumbent Vice-President, Mahamudu Bawumia, were among those who signed the accord.
The Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, presided over the signing with the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, the international community delegation led by African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns and former Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, in attendance.
It is Ghana’s fourth pre-election Peace Accord since its return to democratic rule in 1992.
