A new president will in a few hours be declared elected in the Ghana presidential election.
Candidate of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, who is a former president of the country, John Mahama seems to be coasting to victory in the results collated so far.
Earlier today, Sunday, December 8, 2024, the candidate of the ruling National Patriotic Party, NPP, and vice president of Ghana, Mohamudu Bawumia conceded defeat even before result collation started.
Ait’s Ijeoma Osamor who is still in Accra, Ghana reports that supporters of the opposition candidate, John Mahama took to the streets in jubilation after Bawumia conceded.
Bawumia’s decision has thrown up reactions and jubilations as supporters of the NDC close up streets in Accra Ghana in the spirit of victory.

Meanwhile, the heads of ECOWAS election observation missions to Ghana have commended the vice president of Ghana, who is the candidate of the NPP, Mohamudu Bawumia for his decision to concede defeat, even when the electoral commission is yet to begin the final collation of results.
The team spoke at the opening of the meeting of heads of missions in Accra.
Former Nigerian President GoodLuck Jonathan declined comment, but promised to speak after the official declaration.
The chairman of Nigeria’s Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, commended the resilience of Ghana’s people and political actors.
He said Nigeria and Ghana learn all the time from each other and praised the Ghana EC for practicing what they copied from Nigeria.
12 political parties were on the ballot for the Ghana presidential election, but the contest was between the incumbent vice president Mohamudu Bawumia of the NPP and the former president John Mahama of the NDC.
