The National Economic Council, NEC will at its next meeting expected to hold in January, 2025 extensively deliberate and possibly take a final decision on the creation of State Police in Nigeria

NEC chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima has so far received submissions from the 36 States of the Federation on the establishment of State Police.

The debate for the creation of State Police in Nigeria stems from the centralised nature of the Nigerian Police Force, which is perceived by many as inadequate for addressing the unique security challenges across the country’s diverse regions.

Briefing State House Correspondents after a meeting of the National Economic Council held on Thursday at the Council chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani said most of the States are in agreement with the establishment of State Police in Nigeria.

Governor Sani said Council decided to step down further discussions on the subject matter until its next meeting to enable NEC Secretariat come up with a report that will guide further deliberations before a final decision is made.

NEC also approved a new funding arrangement for the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMAFC).

Council, according to the Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo, approved that RMAFC be funded with 0.05% non oil Federation revenue based on the proposed tax reforms which is subject to further scrutiny by the National Assembly.

NEC also endorsed a draft legislation seeking alternative funding for RMAFC and directed the leadership of the Commission to forward the Bill to the National Assembly for consideration and passage into law.
