Edo State House of Assembly has passed a resolution for the suspension of the eighteen Local Councils chairmen and their vice chairmen for a period of two months following allegations of corrupt practices, insubordination, and gross misconduct.

This resolution was reached after a heated debate at the Anthony Enahoro Assembly Complex wherein fourteen of the twenty four lawmakers voted for their suspension.

The Edo State House of Aseembly is made up of twenty four constituencies with fifteen of its representatives elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

A letter raising concerns about the conduct of the local government Chairmen and their Vice had emanated from the office of the Governor of the state, Monday Okpebholo.

It has to do with what he describes as insubordination, gross misconduct and corruption of the Councils heads who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party following their alleged refusal to submit financial records of their local government to the state government.

The letter elicited divergent reactions from the lawmakers with some of them calling for the suspension of the council chairmen.

After voting on the motion by members of the State House of Assembly, fourteen of them which cut across the three political parties that make up the house were in support of the move to suspend the local Government Executives.

The heads of the legislative arms of the councils have been mandated to oversee the running of the councils for the period in question.
