More concerns have been raised on the State of human rights in contemporary Nigerian Society due to the reoccuring cases of extra-judicial killings,extortion and arbitrary arrests by police Officers.
This was the view of a group of human rights lawyers under the auspices of lawyers watch for justice International initiative who converged on Portharcourt the Rivers State capital to review some of the laws that restrict the rights of individuals in the civic space.
The event which had as focus, prioritizing the rights to dignity of citizens also highlighted the need for relevant authorities to rise to the occasion of protecting the citizenry which is one of the major responsibilities of Government around the world.
They further promised to continue in the awareness of human rights and the need for individuals to identify their rights and respond accordingly when they feel their rights were being trampled.
The event with the topic of discussion ‘The importance of human rights in shaping our future’ had in attendance lawyers from various legal instutes as well as Rivers State ministry of justice
