The 18 Local Councils Chairmen in Edo State under the aegis of the State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), have described their suspension by the State House of Assembly as a nullity and in contempt of existing court orders.

They made their position known at a Media briefing, which held at the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in Benin City.

The Edo State House of Assembly had on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, passed a resolution to suspend from office all the 18 Local Government Areas Council chairmen and their deputies.

The Chairmen of the State chapter of ALGON, Newman Ugiagbe who led his colleagues to the Media briefing said they want to tell members of the public that the suspension as announced by the Edo State House of Assembly is illegal.

Ugiagbe insisted that the elected Council Chairmen will continue to go about their duties as enshrined in the constitution.

In a reaction to the latest developments on the political face off, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie, said the State lawmakers were right exercising its constitutional powers.

He urged the suspended Local Government Areas Council Chairmen to pass through the right channel to express their grievances.

ait.live gathered that the announcement of a 2-month suspension of the 18 Council chairmen and their deputies reportedly followed from a letter written by Governor Okpebholo to the State House of Assembly alleging insubordination, corruption, and gross misconduct against the Council bosses.
