After 16-days in detention, author and activist Dele Farotimi has been granted freedom by a magistrates court in Ado Ekiti
His bail was fixed at N30 million with 3 sureties in like sum who must each have landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.
Farotimi has also been ordered to refrain from granting media interviews and to submit his international passport to the court, while further hearing has been adjourned till February 13, 2025.
The writer was arrested on December 3 in Lagos following a petition by a prominent senior lawyer, Afe Babalola, whom he claimed compromised the Supreme Court to obtain a favourable judgement in a land dispute case. The allegations were made in his now sold out book “The Problem With Nigeria’s Criminal Justice System”
He was subsequently taken to Ekiti state where he was charged on 16-counts bordering on criminal defamation.
