But shortly before the break, Cody Gakpo cut in and fired home the equalizer.
Curtis Jones put the leaders in front for the first time in the game, before Mohamed Salah curled in the third.
The win means that Liverpool now have 42 points after 17 matches they have one game in hand.
Chelsea remain in second with 35 points following a surprise 2-1 home loss to Fulham.
Arsenal will host Ipswich Town on Friday night looking to go second.
