SOUTH KOREA
Scene of Jeju Air flight 2216 crash at Muan International Airport in South Korea

All 175 passengers and four of the dix crew members on board the Jeju Air flight 2216 from Bangkok to Muan have died, after the plane crash-landed at the Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday.

A total of 179 of the 181 people on board the Boeing 737-800 were killed, with just two survivors who were both cabin staff, pulled from the burning wreckage.

State media reports that the passengers included 173 South Koreans and two Thai nationals adding that all casualties were aged between three and 78 years.

The plane coming from Bangkok in Thailand, landed at Muan International Airport in South Korea’s southern region, skidding off the runway and crashing into a wall in a fiery explosion.

South Korean transport officials report that the plane ran into difficulties while approaching landing with the pilot, pulling out of the first attempt to land due to bird interference.

An investigation into the cause is under way but there had been no initial reports of any plane or maintenance problems at take-off.

Distraught families are gathered in the airport’s arrival hall in tears, as they wait for bodies of their loved ones to be identified.
