As the New Year begins, the displaced people of Bakassi have renewed their call for the federal government to address their plight.

Decades after being uprooted from their ancestral lands, they continue to face harsh living conditions, inadequate housing, and limited access to basic amenities.

During an event held in Calabar to celebrate their resilience and unity, the people called for proper resettlement and immediate government’s intervention to alleviate their suffering.

The displacement of the Bakassi people stems from the ceding of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon in 2002 under the Green Tree Agreement.

Since then, thousands of residents have struggled with inadequate housing, lack of basic amenities and poverty.

While the government has made efforts to address their situation, the Bakassi people insist that more needs to be done to fulfill the promises made to them.

For many here, 2025 represents a chance for change and a better future
