Ondo State finally holds LG polls after 13 months of postponements

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa voting in Saturday's LG elections

Voting has commenced in Saturday’s Local Government Election in Ondo State, North-West Nigeria.

In most polling units visited in Akure south and North LGAs, turnout of voters is relatively low with only a handful of residents showing up to cast their ballots.

Men of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies were seen at strategic locations within the metropolis to ensure a peaceful conduct of the poll.

Some voters commended the State Independent Electoral Commission and security operatives for creating a peaceful atmosphere.

A total of 12 political parties are participating in the LG election after the withdrawal of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP from the exercise.

Meanwhile, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Saturday participated in the LG election describing the election as a step towards enhancing grassroots development.

The Governor reiterated the commitment of his administration to the effective running of the LG system in the state in line with the provisions of the law.

Governor Aiyedatiwa cast his vote at Polling Unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government Area, commending the electoral process.

Speaking with journalists, the Governor commended the electoral commission for the seamless conduct of the poll and thanked the people of for participating in the election.

The election for 18 chairmanship positions and 203 councillorship seats was initially scheduled to hold on December 16, 2023, but postponed on three occasions to February 17, 2024 and later July 13, 2024 before February 18 was announced about five months ago.
