Three Real Sociedad fans were stabbed in central Rome on Wednesday during clashes with Lazio supporters on the eve of Thursday’s Europa League match between the two teams, police said.

About 70 Spanish supporters were attacked by about 80 Lazio supporters in Leonina, near the Colosseum, at about 11 p.m. the Rome police spokesperson said.

The altercation erupted in the early hours of the evening near the Piazza Mancini area, a known gathering spot for football fans. Eyewitnesses reported that groups of masked individuals engaged in violent confrontations, armed with knives, bottles, and other makeshift weapons.

Emergency services rushed to the scene as the violence escalated. Paramedics treated several individuals on-site while others were transported to local hospitals. Among the injured, two Spanish men are reported to be in serious condition and are currently receiving treatment.

Italian police have launched an investigation into the incident, deploying additional officers in the area to prevent further clashes. Authorities believe the violence was premeditated, with both groups organizing the confrontation online. Several arrests have been made, though the identities of those detained have not been released

The incident comes ahead of the highly anticipated UEFA fixture between Lazio and Real Sociedad. Security has been significantly increased around the Stadio Olimpico to ensure the safety of fans and players. Officials have urged fans to remain calm and to avoid any confrontations.

The violent clashes have drawn widespread condemnation from both clubs and fans. Lazio and Real Sociedad released joint statements condemning the violence and expressing their support for the injured. The clubs emphasized that football should unite people and called on their supporters to maintain peace.
