The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company has terminated the employment of over 900 staff members.

The management’s recent decision to let go of the over 900 employees, detailed in an internal memo, has prompted immediate and intense demonstrations.

The atmosphere outside the gates of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company is charged with frustration and anger.

For many of the workers, the news has come as a devastating shock.

After dedicating over a decade of their lives to the company, they now find themselves facing an uncertain future.

In March 2024, the National Union of Electricity Employees organised protests addressing longstanding grievances, including unremitted pensions, and the non-payment of death benefits to deceased staff members.

The management of the company, in a statement, provided reasons for the mass layoffs, indicating that the decision is part of their commitment, to adapt to current operational needs and challenges.

The situation is further exacerbated by ongoing power outages in the state, as the unrest disrupts electricity supply.

However, the lack of communication from the company’s leadership has only intensified the workers’ determination to seek justice and fair treatment.
