A fire outbreak has engulfed an Islamiya school, killing at least 17 Almajiri students in the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fire started on Tuesday night and lasted for about three hours, claiming the lives of 17 students, and leaving 16 others with various degrees of injuries.
The fire was said to have been caused by some stored stalks of Guinea corn, locally called karan dawa.
The affected Islamiyya school also known as, “Makarantan Mallam Ghali,” had about 100 of the students in the house.
After the students were evacuated, they never thought that some of them still remained inside the building until after the fire, when they saw their legs and hands burnt beyond recognition.
17 dead bodies were buried this Wednesday, according to Islamic rites.
