The Bauchi State Police Public Relations Unit has sought the cooperation of communities to feel free and report challenges of security within their domain, in a bid to reduce crime and other social vices.

This was disclosed by the state’s command Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakili, during a Police and Community Mutual Dialogue with major stakeholders in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Northeast Nigeria.

The dialogue is aimed at addressing the complex and pressing issues related to peacebuilding, conflict prevention, health emergencies, gender-based violence, and other thematic areas of concern, between the communities and police relationships in Bauchi and Zamfara States.

For Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakili, this is an era of community-based policing, emphasising a common saying that police is your friend.

He urges members of the public to feel free and report issues within their domain.

The facilitator of the dialogue, Shuibu Kobi, while evaluating the response of the Police representatives and the stakeholders, after ten days, called for more tolerance between the police and community members.

He charged the participants on frequent awareness.

The organisers strongly believe that, strengthening ties through information sharing, mutual understanding between the Police and the communities will bridge the gap, and address insecurities, witnessed in most troubled communities in Nigeria.

Some of the issues identified by the community members are lack of trust between the police and the community members, bail money, as police said it is free, poor reporting mechanisms of issues of sexual and gender-based violence, (SGBV) and lack of prompt information sharing, among others.

With this dialogue, it is expected that the relationship between the police and community members will be strengthened, especially in Ningi communities of Bauchi State, Northeast Nigeria.
