The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has seized large quantities of unregistered, banned and fake products during a raid at Ekumi Plaza, a popular drug market in Aba, Abia State.

The Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Federal Taskforce for the South East and South-South, Omoyeni Babatunji, said the operation is part of NAFDAC’s efforts to identify and remove fake, expired, and unregistered drugs from the market.

The raid caught the marketers and their leaders off guard while observing the regular Monday IPOB declared sit-at-home.

Most of the dealers, ostensibly trying to evade justice, gathered a few meters from the market on sighting NAFDAC officials accompanied by a team of security personnel who stationed an Armoured Personnel Carrier at the entrance of the market.

The Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement Federal Taskforce for the South East and South-South, Omoyeni Babatunji, said the operation was based on intelligence received from other security agencies.

He said the inter-agency operation, involving the Police, Army, NAFDAC, and DSS, is geared towards ridding markets in Aba of fake, expired, unregistered, and banned products to safeguard public health.
