The Chairman of the Abia State Football Association, Obioma Onyeaghala has been impeached by members of the association for alleged abuse of office, disrespect to authorities, financial recklessness, among others.

He was removed during the extra-ordinary Congress of the Abia FA held in Umuahia.

However Onyeghala has rejected the impeachment, declaring that those who impeached him were suspended from the FA in the past.

The motion for the impeachment of the Abia FA Chairman was moved by the Chairman of Abia Angels FC, Mr Johnson Nwosu, seconded by Onyeke Onyeukwu from Enyimba FC of Aba and supported by many members present.

But reacting to the development, Onyeaghala insisted that he was elected by the Congress and can only be removed by the Congress.

“Congress brought me and only Congress can remove me.

“My tenure ends on May 5, 2027 and I will stand for re-election”, Onyeaghala vowed.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has intervened in the boiling matter by setting up a three-man committee to address the crises.

This was made known through a letter sent to Abia State by Ali Abubakar Muhammad, NFF’s Head of Member Associations and Special Duties, where the Nigerian apex football body directed the Abia FA members to suspend all activities related to the impeachment until the members of the Committee submits the reports of their findings.

A source at Abia State Sports Council, Umuahia township stadium, said on Thursday that the embattled Chairman of Abia FA has not been in good terms with many leaders of football clubs and the Referees Association.
