CAN FAULTS CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS DURING RAMADAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) says the extended closure of schools in Bauchi, Katsina, Kano and Kebbi states during the Ramadan fasting violates students’ constitutional rights and jeopardises educational progress in the affected parts of the country.

The President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in a statement, expressed concern over lack of inclusivity in the decision-making process and its disproportionate impact on non-Muslim students.

The association stated that the school closures would disrupt education in a region already struggling with high rates of out-of-school children—averaging 44 per cent—and would undermine fairness in governance.

While affirming its respect for religious practices, CAN expressed dismay at the lack of broad consultation with stakeholders before the decision was made.

The statement further called for reversal of the directives mandating a five-week closure of schools for the Ramadan fast, warning that it would pursue legal action if the orders are not rescinded.

It cited global examples, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, UAE, where schools remain open during Ramadan with adjusted schedules.
