SDP
Social Democratic Party, SDP official symbol

Has the Social Democratic Party SDP turned to Nigeria’s political beautiful bride?

That is the question agitating the minds of Nigerians as the country Navigates the political wave that leads to the election that will throw up leaders by 2027.

In this report, our political correspondent Anoyoyo Ogiagboviogie examines the task and hurdles ahead of the SDP in its quest to be the third force in the political realm.

This is the serene environment of the national headquarters of the Social Democratic Party in Abuja.

In the next few weeks, this calm environment will be booming with activities as political actors restrategise for the most popular year in the political lexicon for now, that is 2027.

It is common for all hands to be on deck in the build up to the next major political cycle. But the Social Democratic Party has become the cynosure of all eyes with potentialities of becoming the third force.

Those who believe that something is buzzing in the Social Democratic Party can not be far from the truth. Clearly, former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has become the poster boy of the “movement”, supposedly prepare the way for the big guns. On the back of el-rufai’s decamping from the All Progressives Congress, his son Bashir is already toeing the line of his father. On his X account Bashir wrote: “Peter Obi Surprisingly is not a bad person afterall. My views on him have changed recently. My mind was poisoned by my former party members”. Bashir’s comment is definitely a sign of things to come

But will the SDP be able to withstand the pressure and survive shenanigans of the political class?. The story of the Labour Party readily comes to mind and what is left of the once a vehicle for a new political order.

The state of the major opposition party, the PDP has made the emergence of another party imperative bearing in mind that the ruling All Progressives Congress has turned to an octopus in Nigeria’s political clime.

The answer is in the future. And the future is few days from now, when the coast becomes clearer, when we begin to see the results of the deft moves of the past days and the consultations of the past few nights
