The destructive activities of suspected herdsmen in the Northern Plateau are taking a frightening and dangerous dimension.

Many lives have been lost and over 800 hectares of farmlands worth millions of Naira destroyed, even recently.

The situation has attracted reaction from across the nation, with the latest from the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja and Chairman, Board of Trustees, North Central Peoples’ Forum, Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni.

Findings by a Non-governmental Organisation, Emancipation for Crisis Victims in Plateau State has revealed that, in 2021 alone, over 800 hectares of farmlands with grown crops were destroyed, with many people killed, following the activities of suspected herdsmen in Barkin-Ladi, Riyom, Jos South and Bassa Local Government areas.

Worried by the ugly trend, General Useni says, it is time for farmers in the country to rise and defend themselves and their crops from bandits.

He called on Nigerians to take ownership of their security, in the wake of recent challenges, rather than depend on government.

The former FCT Minister explained that the North Central Peoples’ Forum has visited former Military Heads of State, General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar among others, to find lasting solutions.
