Edo Youths, Civil Society groups protest against land grabbing

There was tension on Monday at the popular Ovonramwen square in Benin city as policemen locked the gate against protesters including the speaker of Edo state house of the assembly who came to show solidarity with Youths protesting against the activities of land grabbers in the state.

After several minutes when calls were made and intervention from higher authorities the security operatives reluctantly opened the gate for the protesters go out and carry out their peaceful protest.

Despite the Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki recently signing a bill into law prohibiting the activities of land grabbers in the state, the practice still goes on unhindered, the situation where a plot of land will be sold to about four or five different persons thereby causing unrest in the area.

Those protesting against the activities of land grabbers in Edo state Converged at the popular Oba Ovonramwen square in Benin city to commence their protest, the speaker of the Edo state house of assembly Marcus Onobun came to show solidarity with them before the protest took off.

After addressing the protesters and joined them to March out for the protests, they met stiff resistance from men of the Nigeria police who locked the gate, thereby preventing them from going out.

After intervention from higher authorities, the security operative opened the gate for the protesters, They took their protest around major roads in Benin metropolis, as well as to the palace of the oba of Benin before heading to the Edo state government house to register their grievances
