The Cross River State Government has strongly condemned the shooting incident involving a police officer that led to the death of Ijeoma Obot and left two others injured.
The officer, Effiong Bassey, has been described by the state police command as a suspected mentally deranged officer.
It was a tragic scene at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters in Calabar, where an officer, allegedly mentally unstable, opened fire, killing one person and injuring two others.
During an on-the-spot assessment, Acting Governor Peter Odey expressed disappointment, questioning the Nigerian Police Force’s screening procedures.
The Acting Governor also visited the family of the deceased, offering condolences and urging residents to remain calm while the government engages with security agencies to ensure that justice is served.
As the state government pushes for accountability, many are calling for stricter mental health evaluations in the Nigerian Police Force to prevent similar tragedies.
