Zamfara state Governor, Dauda Lawal

The leadership of the organised labour, the Nigerian Labour Congress, (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have given a two-week ultimatum to the Zamfara State Government, to address the issues of the N70,000 minimum wage, and the reinstatement of some workers, who they claim were unlawfully removed from the State’s payroll.

The Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Sani Halilu, and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Sai’du Mudi, gave a two-week ultimatum, while briefing Newsmen, over the commencement of the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, claiming that the State government did not use the chat table that was earlier given them.

The organised labour warned that if the State government fail to act appropriately, the workers will be forced to embark on industrial action.

The unions noted that Zamfara State workers did not enjoy the N18,000 National Minimum Wage, initiated and implemented during the President Goodluck Jonathan regime, as well as the N30,000 Minimum wage under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

According to records, this was because the previous administrations at the time did not implement the wage increase policies, but things look different in the Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration as he increased the salaries from N7,000 to N30,000 upon assumption of office in 2023.

Already, the Governor has commenced the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage, though the Organised labour is questioning the module being used, as the State government failed to use the table of the twelve structures it had handed down to them, believing that some people are sabotaging the government.

The State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Sai’du Mudi, called on Governor Dauda Lawal to constitute a Committee to investigate those who are sabotaging the government within two weeks, or else workers in the State will down tools.

The Organised Labour, however said they have confidence in the leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal, and believe that there are individuals behind the act which the Governor is not aware of.
