NAFDAC warns against patronizing drug hawkers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has warned Nigerians against patronizing drug hawkers and other business outlets in the habit of preserving consumables to in a manner that poses high health risks..

The NAFDAC Director-General, Christiana Adeyeye gave the warning through the agency’s Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Fori Tatama, who represented her at a sensitization campaign in Bauchi.

She said Nigerians need to be more responsible for matters pertaining to their health as NAFDAC is constrained by manpower limitations to effectively tackle individuals and businesses selling dangerous products to the people.

A warning was given against using formalin, the chemical used to preserve human corpses, to also preserve meat and fish in major markets.
She said the cooperation of all Nigerians is needed in the fight against the production and sale of harmful food and drugs adding that the NAFDAC certification number issued and attached to products still exists.

The Bauchi sensitization campaign focused on discouraging street drug hawking, the use of chemical substances to preserve food products, and self-medication.
