The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has called on broadcast stations to help safeguard the country by avoiding fake news and reports aimed at misinforming the public, particularly now that the country is faced with many challenges.

The call came at a meeting with Chief Executive Officers of stations, on the implications of broadcast coverage on national security.

The commission charged the media stations to pay attention to the training of staff, and to also fulfil their financial obligations to the commission.

The harmful effect of fake, inaccurate news, hate speech and the need to educate the audience and not misinform them, thereby safeguarding the country, were some of the key issues discussed at the meeting.

NBC asked media stations to pay more attention to the training of staff and building of capacity, through researches, to improve the content and treatment of news stories.

The commission called on broadcast stations to fulfil their financial obligations to NBC, as the commission may soon be self-funding.

The media stations are also to adhere strictly to transmission parameters, to avoid sanctions, as well as endeavour to tender their audited accounts to the commission.

Other papers presented centred on digital switchover, rising breach profile, and the implications of broadcast coverage on security.
