13 states selected for study on deadly farmer-herder crisis in Nigeria

Nigeria may soon a baseline study upon which to develop sustainable policies and programmes to end the deadly violence of farmer-herder crisis in different parts of the country.

A Non-Governmental Organisation, IF ENVIRONMENT that will undertake the study in 6 months with deployment of over 100,000 personnel says the findings of the research will provide “a pathway to sustainable National Livestock Transformation Programme”.

Below is the full text of the statement issued by spokesperson of the organisation, Architect Patrick Ukura in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

NEW MOVE TO END FARMER/HERDER CRISIS IN NIGERIA

A comprehensive programme to assist the FG to end the festering farmer-herder crisis has been released in Abuja by a non-governmental organisation, IF ENVIRONMENT. The puerile bloody confrontation between farmers and herders has sent several thousands of innocent women, children and the old to their early graves and hapless, homeless, desolate displaced persons camps in Nigeria.

IF ENVIRONMENT has released an enthralling brochure with the theme A PATHWAY TO SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL LIVESTOCK TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME. It highlights a major proposal to undertake a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of 13 selected States of Nigeria to ascertain the remote causes of the protracted conflicts amongst mixed farming communities.

An accurate data of the exercise is explained in the brochure as a guide to FG policy decision. This will enable government conserve the environment, create wealth and restore peace in the rural communities. This SEA exercise would involve training and deployment of more than 100,000 personnel over a period of 6 months and also implement the solutions options in 12 months within the 13 selected states.

IF Environment spokesperson, Oxford University-trained environmental expert, Arc. Ukura, Patrick has expressed great optimism that, the grandiose SEA project would be supported by President Buhari Administration; Chief of Staff Office; The Ministry of Environment; Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs and Natural Resource Fund.
