A resident of the area, Mamman Bashar, told AIT news that the students were abducted on Tuesday, September 21 by the gunmen while they were returning to Birnin Yero from Shinkafi town after they wrote their Mathematics exams.

He added that the 5 abducted students are all from Birnin Yero under Shinkafi Local Government Area and that, they were kidnapped between Jangeru and Birnin Yero.

According to him, the bandits were moving towards Sabon Birni in Sokoto state but have been targeting students of some secondary schools in Shinkafi.

Another reliable source who pleaded anonymity said, the office of the Zamfara State Security Adviser has since been briefed about the development including all the names of the 5 abducted students.

AIT was able to reach the source on telephone since he was on transit to Kano after leaving Zamfara shortly after the incident.

The spokesman of the Zamfara state police command Mohammed Shehu, could not be reached for official confirmation due to the suspension of all mobile telecommunications networks in the state.
