Chess Champion, Deborah Quickpen returns to Yenagoa

Nine-year-old Bayelsa State-born Chess Player, Deborah Quickpen, who won a gold medal at the just concluded African Youth Chess Championship, held in Ghana, has returned to Yenagoa amidst jubilation.

At a brief special Welcome Home Ceremony held at the state’s Ministry of Sports in honour of the rising Chess Prodigy Star, who amassed 8.0 points to defeat Tunisia’s Hasnaoui Abrar in her final game, the Commissioner For Youth and Sports, Daniel Igali, promised government’s commitment to take responsibility of ensuring that Deborah Quickpen, participates in next year’s World Youth Cadet Chess Championship, scheduled to hold in Batumi, Georgia.

Coach Bomo Kigigha guided the Nine-year-old to the victorious outing in Ghana.

The parents of the latest Africa Champion of the Under Ten Chess Game, her schoolmates, including top sports stakeholders in Bayelsa State, were among those that celebrated the heroic entry of Deborah Quickpen.
