Worried by the destructive mode of fishing by Illegal fishermen whose activities are posing danger to the aquatic environment in the State, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has passed a one point resolution calling on government at all levels to take action.
The resolution followed a motion by a law-maker, Charles Daniel who said the fishermen use dynamites and dangerous chemicals exposing the people as well as the coastal environment at great risk.

Presenting his motion at the Bayelsa State House of Assembly in Yenagoa, titled, ‘ The Need To Curb Illegal Fishing Techniques in Bayelsa State, the Lawmaker representing Brass Constituency One, Charles Daniel noted that if not checked, the activities of the illegal fishermen mostly around the Brass River area could result in irreversible ecological damage .
Other lawmakers in their contributions expressed fear of possible food poisoning from contaminated fishes, noting that the situation also has the potential of creating an atmosphere for insecurity to thrive around the state’s waterways.
They therefore called on people and traditional rulers of coastal communities to be vigilant at all times.
Following a robust debate, the legislators thereafter amended all four prayers by Charles Daniel into a resolution, urged the Federal and State governments as well as the National Assembly to urgently come to the aid.
