DOHA 2019

Nigeria’s minister of youths and sports development, Sunday dare has set up an eight-member committee to investigate activities of team Nigeria before and during the recently concluded world athletics championship in Doha.

Dare whose body language during the inauguration of the committee this Monday in Abuja showed dissatisfaction with the activities heralding Nigeria’s outing in Doha gave the committee a 7-day ultimatum to come up with recommendations based on investigation on 5 points of action.

Concerns over the inability of team Nigeria to replicate the form that saw it emerge no 1 in athletics at the 12th Africa games, in rabat morocco when the country featured at the world athletics championship in Doha, barely a month after, necessitated the setting up of the committee.

The minister of sports, Sunday dare wants the committee to investigate and unravel the facts and figures  behind the country’s dismal performance particularly the events which led to the disqualification and re-absorption of two promising athletes by the world athletics.

The committee has professor ken anugweje as chairman with two renowned former Nigerian track stars, Mary onyali and falilat ogunkoya as members.

Renowned athletics coach, Rotimi obajimi and veteran athletics journalist dare Esan are members with former secretary of the athletics federation of Nigeria Maria wophill as secretary.

Renowned sports administrator, and former chairman of the Nigeria football association, Ibrahim galadima and former director of sports in the ministry of sports, Umar bindir completes the list.

Nigeria finished with just a bronze medal at the Doha championships to place a distant 9th position among the Africa nations.

Many observers and analysts are hoping that the recommendation of the committee will go a long way in shaping team Nigeria’s performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.
