The European Union (EU) has scaled up its humanitarian aid for the Greater Horn of Africa, West and Central Africa, allocating €258 million to address the urgent needs of millions affected by humanitarian crises.

A Press statement from the EU in Nigeria made available to AIT online,
the Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, said “Across Africa, complex challenges, including security threats, political instability, and socio-economic disparities are fuelling humanitarian crises.
These crises have displaced entire communities and caused widespread food insecurity. The escalating effects of climate change are also intensifying vulnerabilities.”

In the Greater Horn of Africa, €107.5 million will support the most vulnerable people
impacted by conflict and natural hazards, facing forced displacement, food and nutrition insecurity, and poor access to basic services.

The region urgently needs humanitarian aid for approximately 70 million people, with the conflict in Sudan being a major driver of humanitarian needs both within the country and in the region.

For West and Central Africa, €150.6 million will support humanitarian responses in countries directly affected by ongoing insecurity and conflicts.

The funding will provide critical assistance to address the needs of affected populations, including food and livelihoods support, nutrition, healthcare, water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as education.

This allocation brings the total EU humanitarian response in Africa to €750 million in 2025, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to providing emergency assistance to Africa’s most vulnerable populations.

Lahbib emphasized the EU’s role as a reliable partner, stating, “As humanitarian needs grow and resources become more limited, bridging this gap is becoming ever more urgent.
