A Coalition of Civil Society Organization, CSOs, want the National Assembly to Veto President Muhammadu Buhari should he refuse to assent to the electoral act amendment bill 2021.

They made the call at a press conference by a Coalition of Civil Society Organizations on the Electoral Bill 2021 in Abuja.

The National Assembly had transmitted the electoral act amendment bill to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent, a bill that contains specific provisions that is geared towards enhancing the credibility of Nigerian Elections and addressing loopholes in the existing Electoral legal framework.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari has written a letter to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, and the Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, seeking comments from them over the Electoral Act amendment bill.

As the thirty days required for the president to assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill draws near, members of Civil Society Organization want the National Assembly to Veto the president should he refuse to assent to the bill.

While commending President Buhari for consulting ministers and other stakeholders, they urged parties involved to be guided by public interest so as to strengthen the country’s democracy and electoral process.

The group also wants any amendment to the legal framework to be concluded at least six months to the elections as it will help facilittate early preparations and efficient Administration of 2023 general election
