The Abia State Office of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, says it has recorded about 80% increase of written petitions this 2021 as against the 2020 year.

The Nigerian Government Rights body is however calling for the speedy dispensation of justice on cases of human rights abuses in the State.

This came on a day Human Rights activists embarked on an awareness campaign in the streets of Umuahia, the State capital to mark the International Human Rights day.

The State coordinator of the commission, Uche Nwokocha, observed that so many cases of human rights abuses in Abia State have been frustrated due to delays and other factors in the proceedings.

Available records show that complaints on cases of Child abuses and rape are on the increase in the State.

In 2020, a hundred and twenty written complaints and about two thousand oral complaints of child abuses and rape were lodged at the office.

Comparatively, in this 2021 year, written reported incidents have jumped to two hundred, representing about 80% increase, while unwritten ones are far above two thousand.

A legal practitioner, Collins Kalu who reportedly won a recent case of human rights abuse against the Police in Abia State, is blaming the lapses experienced in the dispensation of rights abuse cases especially of child abuse and rape, on the existence of loopholes in Police investigations for such cases.
