Mike Ejeagha, popularly called “Gentleman Mike Ejeagha,” died on Friday night at a hospital in Enugu after a long illness. His son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the news.

The Gwogwogwo singer, was one of the most respected voices in Nigerian highlife music, especially in the 1980s and he stood out for the way he used Igbo folklore and proverbs to tell stories through music.

His songs did not just entertain, they taught life lessons and helped preserve Igbo culture.

Just last year, in 2024, one of his old songs from 1983 titled, “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche”, became popular again when it inspired a viral dance trend on social media called the “Gwo Gwo Gwo challenge.”
