The Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC has officially commenced the construction of its permanent secretariat in Abuja, marking a major step forward in the country’s sports administration.

According to a statement from the Committee, the project is located near the Aviation Village in the Federal Capital Territory on a five-hectare plot allocated by the Federal Government. Once completed, the site will serve as the NOC’s national headquarters and a central hub for Olympic-related activities in Nigeria.

Members of the NOC Board led by its President, Habu Ahmed Gumel, recently undertook a site visit of the project during their meeting on June 11.

Also in attendance were the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Shehu Dikko, and NSC Director-General, Bukola Olapade, alongside members of the NOC Executive Committee.

The planned structure will rise in phases to at least five floors and include state-of-the-art sports training facilities for various federations under the NOC.

The facilities aim to boost athletes development and preparation for international competitions, including the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games.

Beyond serving as the NOC’s administrative base, the secretariat is expected to enhance coordination, training, and capacity-building across the sporting landscape in Nigeria.

Also on the Board’s agenda were updates on the ongoing National Federation elections, as well as preparations for key upcoming events such as the African Schools Sports Games in Algeria from July 25 to August 5, 2025 and the Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia from November 17 to 21, 2025.

The NOC describes the project as a bold move to invigorate national sports programmes and foster excellence at all levels of athletic performance.
