The dust is yet to settle following last week’s devastating attack in Yelewata, Benue State and subsequent visit by the President Bola Tinubu as concerned citizens are calling on him to closely monitor his recommendations to ensure its full implementation.
They also called for sustained support from the Federal government to deal with the huge humanitarian crisis and durable solutions to end the protracted uncertainty.
Although the State Commissioner of Police declares Yelwata now safe after last week’s devastating invasion, many residents remain apprehensive and continue to live in fear for their safety and are currently sheltered at the international market in Makurdi the State capital.
For some lucky survivors, the critical issue of their safety throws up many more concerns of predominant farmers who were self-sufficient now joining the league of countless dependants the State is already grappling with
So when well spirited individuals show up in Yelwata to cushion the effect, they are received with open arms and enormous gratitude.
They still need more support as many are not only homeless but their source of livelihood has been disrupted at the peak of the farming season.
The visits bring hope and solidarity to the grieving community, who continues to pick up the pieces after last week’s invasion and also a reaffirmation that they are not alone in their pain.
