Available records show that about 285 million widows around the world with over 115 million of them living in deep poverty.
In Nigeria, there are thousands of young widows left helpless with most of them living in extremely poor conditions, not knowing when their next meal will come for them and their kids.
The Nigerian government through its Women Affairs ministry in partnership with Helpline Social Support Initiative has however unveiled the renewed hope social impact programme for Widows in Abuja to facilitate women’s access to productive resources and business services among other things.
Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman – Ibrahim encouraged some widows during the unveiling of the renewed hope social impact programme for Widows targeted to help facilitate women’s access to productive resources and business services by addressing regulatory barriers and promoting women’s active participation in the society.
The programme is also focusing on helping to set Up Trade Opportunities For Nigerians
Investing in widow’s economic empowerment projects which is hoped to create a direct path to eradicating poverty.

The President, Helpline Social Support Initiative, Jumai Ahmadu, said the renewed hope social impact programme is a call to action and a commitment to building resilience and restore dignity through sustainable support systems, empowerment programmes, and inclusive policies.
Ahmadu insisted that this year’s International Widow’s day is in line with the vision of launching impactful activities including free NHIS onboarding, financial awareness sessions, and digital marketing skills training, all designed to provide widows with tools for economic independence and improved well-being.
