President Bola Tinubu is calling for urgent reforms in the global financial, healthcare, and governance systems, saying it’s time to prioritize fairness, inclusion, and the interests of emerging economies, especially Africa.

Speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, President Tinubu said global inequalities in healthcare, climate action, and financing continue to hinder development in poorer nations.

Tinubu told fellow leaders that Africa has contributed the least to climate change but suffers the most.

He emphasized the need for a fairer system, one that allows developing nations to access technology, financing, and debt relief.

Nigeria, now a BRICS partner nation, is championing South-South cooperation and pushing for global policies that reflect the needs of younger populations, like Nigeria’s, where 70 percent are under 30.

President Tinubu also stressed that emerging economies must take the lead in driving solutions to climate change, healthcare, and economic reform.

Nigeria’s delegation to the summit included Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar and Finance Minister, Wale Edun among others.

This year, Brazil holding the
rotating BRICS presidency,
announced Nigeria’s formal admission as a BRICS partner, alongside several other emerging nations.

As Africa’s largest economy and one of the world’s most populous nations, Nigeria says it’s ready to play a leading role in shaping global reforms.
