President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died at the age of 90.

In a condolence message released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late monarch as a revered traditional ruler, statesman, and symbol of peace, wisdom, and continuity.

President Tinubu condoled with the royal family, the government and people of Oyo State, and the entire Ibadanland over what he called a significant loss to the nation.

“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was not only a custodian of Ibadan’s rich history and culture but also a man of intellect and principle whose contributions extended beyond the palace into education, governance, and national development,” the President said.

He noted that the late monarch’s death came just days before his planned 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary celebrations, to which the President had been invited.

Born on July 5, 1935, in Okugbaja village, Ita Baale, near Akanran in present-day Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State, Oba Olakulehin rose through Ibadan’s unique succession system, alternating between the civil (Otun) and military (Balogun) lines. He ascended the throne on March 14, 2024, following the passing of Oba Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II.

An accomplished academic, Oba Olakulehin held a master’s degree in administration and economics and pursued doctoral studies. He lectured at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was widely respected for his integrity and principle-driven scholarship.

President Tinubu praised the monarch’s legacy of bridging tradition and modernity, noting that his wisdom and moral authority were stabilising forces in Ibadanland and across the Yoruba nation.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and urged the people of Ibadan to find comfort in the enduring values and legacy of their late royal father.
