The Nigerian Army has vowed not to tolerate any conduct that undermines its mission of promoting peace and security across the West African sub-region.

Chief of Operations, Army, Major General Uwem Bassey, made this known in Jaji during the graduation ceremony of Nigerian Company 4, deployed under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea Bissau.

The five-week pre-deployment training for the 173 troops under the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau, commenced on June 13.

The training incorporated the United Nations Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials, alongside the ECOWAS peace support doctrine.

Emphasis was placed on discipline, rules of engagement, international humanitarian law, and the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.

Following weeks of rigorous classroom sessions and practical field exercises, the troops have now been certified as mission-ready to contribute to peace-building efforts in Guinea-Bissau.

The Chief of Operations, Army, Major General Uwem Bassey, represented by Major General Nansak Shagaya, Deputy Chief of Operations for Peace Support, congratulated the graduating troops, and commended their resilience and dedication, throughout the training.

He urged them to remain conscious of their responsibilities, as they head to the mission area.

General Bassey further reminded the troops that their conduct in the field would not only determine the success of the mission, but also shape the perception of the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation as a whole.

As Nigeria continues to assert its leadership in regional peacekeeping, the 173 troops now stand as ambassadors of the country’s enduring commitment to peace, stability, and service, beyond its borders.
