The All Progressives Congress (APC) is now just three seats away from achieving a two-thirds majority in the Nigerian Senate, an important constitutional threshold needed to amend the constitution, override presidential vetoes, and initiate impeachment proceedings.

This significant shift follows the defection of four senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC, each citing irreconcilable divisions within the PDP as the reason for their decision.

The defecting senators are

• Sampson Ekong – representing Akwa Ibom South

• Aniekan Bassey – representing Akwa Ibom North-East

• Francis Fadahunsi – representing Osun East

• Fadeyi Olubiyi – representing Osun Central

The announcement was made during plenary, with APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, and former Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, present to witness the development.

With this wave of defections, the APC now controls 70 out of 109 seats in the Senate just three short of the 73 seats required for a two-thirds majority, putting the party in a stronger position to drive its legislative agenda without requiring bipartisan support.
