President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan.

During a reception held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja shortly after their arrival from Côte d’Ivoire, the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, praised the team for their resilience, consistency, and for bringing glory to the nation.

As part of the reward package, President Tinubu announced a cash gift of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for the coaching crew and technical team members.

He said the gesture reflects the country’s deep appreciation for the team’s hard work and their remarkable feat of winning a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.

In addition to the monetary reward, the President also conferred national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON) on members of the team, recognising their contribution to national pride and global sporting excellence.

The D’Tigress, coached by Rena Wakama, defeated Senegal in the finals to clinch their seventh African title. Wakama becomes the first female coach to lead a team to back-to-back AfroBasket victories.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the development of sports in Nigeria, calling on the team to continue being role models for young women and future athletes across the continent.
