Direct Primary a ploy to reject Electoral Bill- Gov. Wike

Rivers State governor, Nysom Wike has said that the issue of direct primary was only a ploy by President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress(APC) to ensure that the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 never saw the light of the day.

He said the purported conflict of interest between APC Governors and some APC federal lawmakers was only a smokescreen.

Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, Wike said he was not in any way surprised that the President refused to sign the Electoral bill into law; wondering why Nigerians reposed much hope on Buhari after he refused to give his assent to the amendment that approved the use of card reader in the build up to the 2019 general elections.

Speaking on a Current Affairs Programme on AIT with Gbenga Aruleba three weeks ago, Wike predicted that Buhari will not sign the Electoral bill into law because he has no such plans.

With the expiration of the 30 days period within which Buhari was expected to take a decision on the bill; Governor Wike told reporters that he feels vindicated.

While accusing the National Assembly of deliberately foot dragging on the issue;
Wike called on Nigerians to save the nation’s democracy; warning them of the consequences of repeating the mistakes they made in 2015 and 2019 when they voted in the APC led government.
