NASARAWA
Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, is engaging with the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, and the Joint Negotiation Council of Pensioners as part of a broader plan to design interventions with direct impact on workers, pensioners, and the general public.

The Governor at the meeting in Government House Lafia explained that the engagement is to help in mapping out new intervention measures to cushion the impact of the current economic hardship on citizens across the state in line with Presidential directives.

The high-level meeting also had pensioners and senior government officials in attendance, all seeking a common ground to provide immediate relief for citizens struggling with rising costs of living.

Commissioner for Finance, Munirat Abdullahi, who is head of the committee explained that some of the recommendations include immediate payment of gratuities for state and local government retirees, distribution of agricultural inputs such as fertilisers to farmers, and the establishment of food banks in all local government areas to provide food at subsidised rates, among other measures.

State Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Simon Yakubu, described the initiative as timely and commendable, noting that it would bring significant relief to workers across Nasarawa State.

With the committee’s proposals now awaiting action, all eyes are on the State Government’s implementation strategy, which is a move stakeholders say could set the pace for other states in cushioning economic hardship.
