Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, at the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to keep his promise never to allow the Union or any other tertiary education union embark on strike again.

The union gave the advice while expressing concern over the failure of the Federal Government to address its various demands more than two years into the present administration.

During a solidarity walk within the institution, Chairman of ASUU, FUTA Branch, Professor Pius Mogaji, lamented that despite repeated appeals and agitations, government has continued to turn deaf ear to the yearnings of university lecturers.

He noted that the patience of members has been overstretched and warned that the union may be forced to down tools if urgent steps are not taken.

The demands, according to ASUU, include full implementation of the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government Agreement, sustainable funding of universities, revitalization of the education system, and payment of outstanding 25 to 35 percent salary arrears.

Professor Mogaji stressed that unless government takes decisive action during its next meeting with the union, lecturers across the country may have no option but to embark on an indefinite strike.
