The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC has achieved an absolute two-thirds majority in the Nigerian Senate, following the defection of Senator Samaila Dahuwa , representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

With this defection, the APC now commands 73 of the 109 Senate seats, while the PDP holds 27, the Labour Party 4, APGA 2, SDP 1, and NNPP 1.

This new configuration gives the APC a super majority, which is a significant political milestone with far-reaching implications for parliamentary decision-making and the balance of power within the legislature.

Under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended) two-thirds majority is the voting threshold required to pass critical resolutions including constitutional amendments, impeachment motions, and approval of key executive requests.

This effectively means that the ruling party can now pass executive bills, budgets, and other major legislation without relying on opposition support, potentially weakening legislative checks on the executive arm of government.

Speaking on his defection, Senator Dahuwa said his decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders, party stakeholders, and constituents in Bauchi North.

He added that prolonged internal divisions and lack of strategic direction within the PDP have continued to undermine collective progress and effective representation

He added that joining the APC is motivated by his belief in the party’s commitment to unity, stability, and good governance, and his desire to contribute to the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration.
