Over 26.7 million people in 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT are in acute food crisis and the number might increase to 34.1 million by June to August 2026, if urgent measures are not taken to address the situation.
This is contained in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation Cadre Harmonisé 2026 analysis, which shows that over 26 million people are currently in the critical phases of food and nutrition insecurity, and about 714,805 people are in emergency situation and are in dire need of urgent intervention.

The crisis is driven by a combination of insecurity, climate shocks like floods, displacement, and government policies impacting local production. The situation is already dire, with many households coping by reducing meal quantity and quality.
The October 2026 Cadre Harmonise, CH analysis was conducted in 27 states of Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Edo, Enugu, Ekiti, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara including the Federal Capital Territory.
The CH calls on partners in the Food Security Sector and Nutrition Cluster to intensify support for effective intervention.
