Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to improving infant and maternal health through sustained investments aimed at reducing mortality rates among mothers and children.

The Governor made this pledge during a joint meeting between the Kano State Government and the Lives and Livelihoods Fund, that is providing over $8 million in grants to launch a new intervention programme focused on safeguarding the lives of mothers and infants in the state

Recent statistics show that Nigeria’s infant mortality rate stands at approximately 60 deaths per one thousand live births, while the maternal mortality ratio is estimated at 993 deaths per 1,000 live births.

This disturbing figure—particularly alarming in Northern Nigeria—has prompted the Lives and Livelihoods Fund to invest a remarkable $8 million in an infant and maternal health intervention for Kano State, an initiative the State Government has warmly welcomed.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Governor Yusuf, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the intervention funds are effectively utilised for their intended purpose, to improve the well-being of mothers and children across the state.

The delegation from the Lives and Livelihoods Fund and the Islamic Development Bank expressed satisfaction with the successful implementation of previous interventions in Kano State, particularly in the agro-pastoral development sector.

Over the years, the LLF and Islamic Development Bank have implemented several impactful projects in Kano State-initiatives that have enhanced livelihoods, boosted the local economy, and supported women in agriculture and the informal sector.

The new health intervention marks yet another milestone in strengthening the state’s healthcare system and improving lives.
